Retired basketball star Scottie Pippen didn’t score a slam dunk at the U.S. Supreme Court Monday.

The high court said it wouldn’t let the ex-Chicago Bulls player continue pressing forward with a defamation lawsuit against media outlets that falsely reported he had filed for bankruptcy, the Associated Press reports (via ESPN).

By declining to grant cert, the Supreme Court will let lower courts’ decisions dismissing the defamation suit stand.

Attorneys for Mr. Pippen and the media outlets weren’t immediately available to comment.

In 2011, Mr. Pippen sued such media giants as NBCUniversal Media LLC and CBS Interactive Inc. seeking at least $10 million in damages. The suit, according to Crain’s Chicago Business, called out the media companies for their allegedly “sloppy conduct” in reporting a bankruptcy filing that “a mere click of the mouse” would have proved didn’t exist.

But lower courts dismissed the lawsuit, finding that as a public figure, Mr. Pippen couldn’t meet the high bar necessary to prove that media outlets published their reports knowing they were false or with “reckless disregard for the truth.”
